From Charles Street Jail to Liberty Hotel

When I was younger I really wanted to be an architect, after I realised I hated school I knew that was never going to be a thing, but I still absolutely love looking at it! I think it’s amazing in particular when buildings start as one thing and get transformed in to something completely different but manage to keep some personality from the original state, which brings me to the Liberty Hotel.

Built in 1851 and a place that Malcom X was once held, the Charles Street Jail in downtown Boston is now classed as one of the worlds best and most luxurious hotels!

Having kept a lot of the elements from the jail in this stunning architectural revamp, the historic prison guard catwalks remain as does the soaring 90-foot atrium and the inmates exercise yard is now a beautifully landscaped courtyard, and the former “drunk tank” which is reconfigured as the aptly named Alibi Bar and Lounge.

So if on your luxury trip and you want to sit in a jail cell for a bit then this is the place for you! If you probably can’t afford to stay there like me then maybe just wear something nice and go sit in the bar and take in the beautiful architecture until you get thrown out!
