Rum n Reggae x The iLL sessions exclusive guest MIX!

Check it out, a fully exclusive mix for you guys, The iLL sessions family, from the Rum n Reggae crew! It might be crispy cold outside but the air is clear and the sun is shinning down and this mix is the perfect thing to get your head boppin’ and your mouth grinning in the run up to summer!

So I had a little chat with the men themselves and here’s what they had to say!

Joey B:

I started dj-ing when I was 14 because I was really into rap music, when I started playing I also got into dancehall and revival reggae in a big way. Djs and sound systems that have had a major influence on me are DJ Screw, Michael Watts, Funkmaster Flex, Rodigan, Tappa Benz, Stone Love, Bass Odyssey, Killamanjaro, Goldfinger and Westwood.

Since moving to Manchester from Yorkshire in the early 2000s I’ve put my energy into a Dancehall night called Hotmilk and more recently I’m very proud to be part of the Swing Ting team, and of course Rum n Reggae which happens the first Monday of every month in the bar area of Soup Kitchen, in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. It’s a strictly vinyl night where we take it from Blue Beat and Studio One right up to Busy Signal and Chronixx.

I started playing records at 17, I was really into hip hop and rnb, then I got into more dance music styles. Through record shopping I got into reggae and dancehall and when I moved to Manchester in 2006 I loved Hotmilk; Joey’s night with Bobby Irish, Amanlikesam and Riddim Master where they played Jamaican music of all styles. I started digging for more foundation reggae sounds, going further back in recent years to search old blue beat ska, rocksteady and mento music. I co-founded the Swing Ting club in 2008 with DJ Platt, current residents/crew include Joey B, Murlo, Fox, Platt & Myself… We’ve recently launched the label branch of which I’m very excited about. Lots of music coming in 2015 including an ep dropping next month featuring London MC/Singjay Trigganom. Big DJ influences; Heartless Crew, Jon K, Oneman, Westwood, Brackles.

Obviously make sure you keep your eyes on what Samrai has to share in the future!

Thanks to you both!! Big ups for the iLL mix!!

So open the curtains, let some light in, hit the download button push up the volume and take a listen to the mix and we’ll see you at the next Rum & Reggae! On the 1st Monday of each Month with special guests passing through, hosted by MC Fox – – it’s a great chance to dig and play older bits that might not be as suitable for club sessions.
